Windowsill Grow Kit:
Welcome to the freshest corner of your home!
Thank you for choosing Seeded's Window Sill Grow Kit. This simple, elegant system is designed to make growing nutritious microgreens and baby greens effortless and rewarding. Let’s get started.
Kit Contents
1x Grow Planter with Drain Holes
1x Bottom/Blackout Tray
6x Compress Coco Pellets
1x Nutrient Mix (for 1 Gal)
1x Seed Pack (see variety on label)
Step 1: Prepare Your Grow Medium
Open grow kit and place the coco pellets and nutrient packet to the side.
Prepare the nutrient packet per instructions on the label.
Hydrate the Coir: In a separate bowl, add the nutrient solution to the pellets. Use approximately one tablespoon of solution per pellet. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
Fluff and break apart the coir with your hands or a fork until it is moist, crumbly, and uniform - like a damp sponge that holds its shape when squeezed, with no excess water dripping.
Fill the Tray: Evenly spread the prepared coir into your planter. Level so that there is an even surface.
Step 2: Sow Your Seeds
Open your seed pack. For most microgreens, you will sow densely.
Scatter Seeds: Sprinkle the seeds evenly across the surface of the moist coir. Aim for the seeds to be close but not piled on top of each other.
Press & Mist: After sowing, gently press the seeds into the coir surface with your hand or a fork. This ensures good contact.
Initial Watering: Using a mister or a gentle stream from a small cup, thoroughly moisten the seeds and the top layer of coir. Do not flood the tray.
Step 3: The Germination Phase (Days 1-5)
Cover for Darkness: For best germination, most seeds need darkness and consistent moisture. You can cover the tray with the blackout tray. If soil is overhydrated and dripping place on a plate until moisture stops.
Check Daily: Peek once a day to ensure the surface is still moist. During this period regular water should be used as enough nutrients are added during the initial watering. Use a mister or water lightly if surface is dry.
Once They Sprout: In 4-5 days, you will see tiny sprouts (radicles). As soon as most seeds have sprouted and you see little stems pushing up, remove the cover. This is the time for light!
Step 4: Grow in the Light (Days 5-Harvest)
Find Your Spot: Place your uncovered planter on a sunny south or west-facing windowsill. Microgreens need 4-6 hours of direct light daily.
Rotate for Even Growth: Turn the tray 180 degrees every morning to prevent the greens from leaning too far towards the light.
Water Carefully: The #1 rule for microgreens: do not overwater. Check the tray daily. The best method is to bottom water:
Lift the planter from the bottom tray.
Add nutrient solution to the bottom tray.
Gently set planter back in to avoid spillage.
Watch Them Grow: Your greens will develop their first true leaves (the second set of leaves) and gain vibrant color.
Step 5: Harvest & Enjoy! (Days 7-14)
Your greens are ready when they are 5-12 cm (2-5 inches) tall and have developed their first true leaves.
How to Harvest: Using clean, sharp scissors, snip the greens just above the surface of the coco coir.
Enjoy Immediately: Microgreens are most nutritious and flavorful right after harvest. Rinse gently if needed and add to salads, sandwiches, soups, or as a garnish.
Note on Regrowth: Most microgreens are a "one-cut" crop. The nutrients for this growth come from the seed itself. A second growth is possible but will be less vigorous and nutritious. We recommend starting a fresh tray for continuous harvests.
For a more traditional "baby greens" let plants grow for an additional week or until reaching desired growth.
Troubleshooting & Pro Tips
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Solution |
| Slow or No Germination | Seeds too dry, too cold, or poor seed-to-medium contact. | Ensure medium is consistently moist (not wet), keep in warm spot (18-24°C / 65-75°F), press seeds firmly into medium. |
| Long, Leggy, Pale Stems | Not enough light after uncovering. | Move to a brighter windowsill immediately. Consider a small grow light if your window light is weak. |
| Mold or Fuzzy Growth | Overwatering, poor air circulation, contaminated medium. | Stop watering. Increase air flow (a small fan helps). Remove any visibly moldy patches. Ensure you are bottom watering. |
| Greens Wilting or Yellowing | Underwatering, or the crop is finished. | Check moisture daily. If coir is dry and it's pre-harvest, water immediately. If post-harvest, it's the natural end of the cycle. |
| Uneven Growth | Uneven seeding or watering, tray not rotated. | Try to sow seeds more evenly, ensure consistent moisture, rotate tray daily. |
Pro Tip for Success: Start a new tray every 7-10 days for a constant, uninterrupted supply of fresh greens. Label trays with the sowing date!
Cleaning & Reuse
After harvest, remove the used coco coir and roots (it makes excellent compost!).
Wash the planter & tray thoroughly with warm, soapy water. A quick rinse with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) is a great natural disinfectant.
Rinse well and let air dry completely before starting your next batch.
Happy Growing!
