How We Are Growing:
We're taking a different approach to how we are looking to grow. Below are some of the key points about our approach.
Activating Underutilized Spaces
The biggest difference in our approach relates to where we are growing. With the goal of activating spaces there are more factors for us to consider outside of yield.
Some of the other items we consider when determining if we are "successful" include social use, ability to reduce environmental impact of food, and educational opportunities.
Container Growing
Our first round of systems all focus around the ability for us to produce in containers. This is in attempt to work around some of the common challenges associated with urban / pocket farming.
Soil Suitability: Many lots in urban spaces have either been compacted or contaminated by urban living. By using containers we can source quality component like compost to create environments for plants thrive.
Land Use Rules & Regulations: There has been a large amount of growth in the acceptance of plant-based ag within cities. At the same time, there still many hurdles to practical implementation due to rules & regulations. We are working around these hurdles to increase the number of spaces that can either primarily or secondarily produce food.
Development Pressure: While the lots we target are currently underutilized, that might not always be the case. In fact, by turning empty spaces into places we actually intend to create an area were demand is higher. Having movable systems allows us to be flexible and adjust and ensure we are growing in an space that makes economic sense.
Eliminating Hurdles
One of the drivers for starting Seeded & Cs' Farms was seeing how disconnected people have gotten from our food systems.
We aim to grow in a way that can meet people where they are at to help increase interactions with how food is grown and distributed. Our methods seek to simplify some of the many variables that can be intimidating to new growers.
What We Are Growing:
Check out what we are growing this year and into the future!
Flowers
Flowers serve as a powerful tool to beautify a space. They are also a high value crop. This year we are growing a small you-pick patch of zinnias and sunflowers.
Food
One of our core missions is to increase the supply of local and nutritional foods into communities.
This year we will be working on a fall veggie garden to see the yield we get on several cool season crops.
Future Opportunities
We are always looking for new crops to try our and see if they are a good fit for our setups. We will continue to look for opportunities to provide unique flavors, fill supply gaps, and supply nutritional food.
